What Does God Require?

stop and walk

He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?  Micah 6:8 NKJV

Christianity, boiled down to it’s purest state is really quite simple. Do what’s right, love mercy and walk humbly with God. Of course, we don’t always do the right thing, we don’t always show mercy and we often walk away from God and do our own thing; that’s why we need a Savior. But even Jesus doesn’t present a complicated Christianity. Consider His answer when an expert in Old Testament Law wanted to know what He believed was the greatest commandment.

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40 NIV

Micah boiled it down to three things, Jesus simplified it even more.  Walk humbly with God and love Him, not casually, but with all your heart! That’s the whole point of Christianity. It’s not about being religious but about enjoying a personal relationship with God. Then love others, and show them the same mercy and love God has shown to you. Jesus went so far as to say every other instruction we are given hangs on these two. It really doesn’t get any simpler than that! Luke tells us of an account that happened when Jesus was visiting two sisters that further illustrates the idea of Micah 6:8.

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 NIV

Mary was interested in only one thing, listening to Jesus while she sat at his feet. Martha was distracted by all the work she needed to do. She was worried and upset about many things. In over estimating the importance of “doing” things for Jesus, Martha was missing out on the chance to just spend time with him, to listen to him and share her heart with him. Don’t allow the busyness of life to keep you from spending time completely focused on God today. How different will today be if instead of running in every direction you simply slow down and walk humbly with your God?
