A Mighty Warrior

Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the Israelites retreated,  but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The Lord brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead. 2 Samuel 23:9-10 NIV

I love this story of Eleazar! As I think through the parallels between this story and spiritual warfare, it’s easy to see why he was considered a “mighty warrior.”

  1. He was with his the king when he taunted the enemy who was gathered there for battle. Satan often has his troops gathered against us for battle, and we are wise to remain close to our King!
  2. When everyone else retreated, he stood his ground! His close relationship with the king, gave him the courage to stand strong, even when those serving along side of him retreated in fear. We are wise to keep our eyes on the King, rather than on the people around us.
  3. He struck down the enemy until his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. He held onto his sword so tightly and so intensely that his hand was locked in that position! God gives us His Word as our offensive weapon. If we plan to engage in spiritual warfare, we must have a tight grip on His Word! We must be “frozen” to it, inseparable, unable to put it down.
  4. The LORD brought about a great victory that day. Our victory against Satan’s schemes will only come from the Lord! Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
  5. The troops returned, but only after the battle had ended. Sometimes God calls us to battle alone, but it’s encouraging to know that God does not call us to remain alone. He knows we need the support of others. So next time you seem to be battling alone, remember that God is with you, and He will again surround you with others to serve alongside you. It’s okay if you need to be the strong one, just stand your ground, holding tight to the sword, and trust your King to bring about a great victory.
