We Need Each Other

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NLT

I chuckled when I saw the picture above, but it reminded me, quite humorously of the danger that faces each one of us. We have an enemy who seeks to destroy all of us!  Benjamin Franklin got it right when he said, “If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately.” Jesus prayed that we would be one, just as He and the Father are one because He knew we would need each other. Unity within the body of Christ was a focus of the early church.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47 NIV

That’s a church model that our generation has lost sight of. They connected on a daily basis. They learned together, shared meals and spent time in prayer. I admire their love for each other and willingness to share everything with their brothers and sisters in Christ. That’s the kind of unity that Jesus wanted His followers to experience. Not just in the early church, but today as well.

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. John 17:20-23 NIV

Find believers who will support you in your walk and who you too can encourage. Take the time to connect with them daily. Don’t allow the business of this world to dominate your time and keep you from relationships that really matter. You were meant to share life with other believers, to laugh and cry together, to bear one another’s burdens and to seek the Lord together.
