All Our Busy Rushing Ends In Nothing

Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered— how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.” We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. Psalm 39:4-7 NLT

As I approach the start of another busy day these verses challenge me to evaluate my life in the light of eternity. How much of what I’ll do today will have a lasting impact? If I exhaust myself in pursuit of the great American dream, I’ll have no time or energy left to pursue what really matters, my relationship with God. There’s nothing wrong with having a good job and working hard, but it’s important to strive to maintain a proper balance.

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? Mark 8:36 NASB

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal;  for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:19-21 NASB

It’s good to remember that our lifetimes are confined to a limited number of days. We only have so much time to walk with the Lord here on earth, before we face Him in judgement. What would you do differently today if your knew you were going to die tonight? How would your life change if you knew December 31st would be your last day on earth?

Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered.”
