What Are You Wearing This Halloween?

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Romans 8:37 NKJV

Millions of kids all over the world will trick-or-treat today! I remember the excitement year after year of choosing the perfect costume. It was the one time each year, I could be whoever I wanted to be! I would put on the costume and my imagination would take over. Our favorite family costume was a homemade knight suit, complete with a shield, a sword, and a silver helmet made from a spray painted plastic gallon milk jug. There were four kids in my family and I think all of us wore it at least once and most of us wore it multiple times. I believe it’s actually still tucked away in my parents attic.  It was fun masquerading and the sugar rush from the pillow case full of candy made it a night to remember!

Now that I’m older, and most definitely wiser, I still put on a suit of armor each and every day.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:10-17 NIV

Halloween is the perfect time to be reminded that evil is not just in scary movies, and demons don’t just show up on your step, ring your doorbell and say “Trick or treat.” Satan is real, and he works hard devising schemes to steal your joy and destroy your faith in God. His goal is to keep all men from serving God, so believers and followers of Jesus are the primary targets of his attacks. But our God does not leave us defenseless! If you inundate your mind with truth, like a belt around your waist, it will hold you together. Doing the right thing, like a well fitted breastplate, will guard your heart. Becoming more and more familiar with the Gospel of Jesus Christ will give you peace and make you ready for every attack. Walking in faith, like a large shield, will extinguish all the flaming arrows Satan hurls in your direction. They will not be able to hurt you! Asking God to accept the blood of Jesus as punishment for your sins and submitting your life to Him will save you from eternal separation from God and the torment of hell.

Get a tight grip on the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. Wield it well! Never put it down. It is your number one weapon against every attack!

So what are you going to be this Halloween? I’m going to be a conqueror!

  1. A good reminder that we see the displays of evil around Halloween, but they are present, yet invisible, every day of the year
