Who Do You Want Governing Your Mind?

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 NIV

Who governs your mind, the Spirit or the flesh? Well, I suppose that depends on who you’ve elected. I mean, governors are given authority by gaining the most votes, right? I like the NIV’s rendition of this verse and appreciate their selection of the word “governed,” because it reminds me that we have some choice in who or what controls our minds.

Every time you pray, whether it’s a quick whisper or a prolonged period of fasting, you are casting votes to elect the Spirit as governor of your mind. You are inviting Him in and petitioning Him to take the lead role.

More votes are cast in the Spirit’s direction each moment you spend in worship. During worship we acknowledge the authority of God and willingly submit to His control. Isn’t that what it means to be governed; to follow the lead of someone with more authority than ourselves?

We stuff the ballot box with more votes for the Spirit as we focus on the word of God and let His word permeate our thoughts. Reading the Bible, listening to a sermon, attending a group study or discussing the word with a brother or sister in Christ are effective ways to ensure the Spirit wins control of your mind.

On the contrary, when do we cast votes for the flesh?

  • Every time we place before our eyes an image that leads us into lust or perversion
  • Moments spent in entertainment that gratifies our sinful nature
  • When we allow our minds to be consumed with the business of life

The mind is the battleground where spiritual war is won or lost. You’re going to want a strong, dependable governor leading in control! May I suggest there is no better leader than the Spirit of God. Who are you going to vote into office?
