Our minds are more powerful than any computer, they have the capacity to store an incredible amount of information! But there are some things we are wise to remember and some we should forget. What does the Bible have to say about this?
Remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. Ephesians 2:12 NASB
We should always remember where we were before we came to know Christ. What was your life like? What did He save you from?
Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced. 1 Chronicles 16:12 NIV
It’s good to remember all the things the Lord has done in your life up until this point. Keeping a mental record of His faithfulness helps you stand strong in your faith when things go wrong. If He has not let you down in the past, He will not let you down now.
Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Psalm 103:2 NIV
There’s something to be said for remembering all the benefits of knowing God. Make a mental list and review it frequently.
But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:25 NIV
There is much benefit in storing the Word of God in your heart and mind, but it’s not enough to simply hear the Word and then forget about it. We must apply the Word in our lives everyday.
Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. Isaiah 43:18 NIV
As important as it is to remember God’s faithfulness and all He has done in our lives, it’s equally important to be able to let go of the past and move forward in all that God has for us. Things do not always stay the same, nor are they meant to. Our relationship with God must be active and current. It’s also important to be able to let go of past pain. 1 Corinthians 13:5 tells us that love keeps no record of wrongs. It is critically important that we have the ability to let go and forget about the times we have been hurt in the past. There is no good that comes from replaying past hurts over again and again in our minds. Doing so allows Satan to plant seeds of bitterness.
So be selective as to what you store in the memory stick of your mind. Be sure it contains those things that will propel you forward in your walk with the Lord and not anything that will give Satan the opportunity to hinder you in your spiritual journey.
