You Give Them Something To Eat

Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.” He replied, “You give them something to eat.” Luke 9:12-13a NIV

The disciples saw the need of the crowd, but didn’t see their ability to meet that need. Jesus challenged them to meet the need of the crowd. Likewise, Jesus challenges us to meet the needs of those around us.

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.”  (About five thousand men were there.) Luke 9:13b-14a NIV

“We have only…” When I see the needs of those around me, my resources, in comparison to the need, seem small & insufficient.

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”  The disciples did so, and everyone sat down.  Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people.  They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. Luke 9:14b-17 NIV

Left overs??? I love that! What a powerful lesson for the disciples and for us. With Jesus, we have more than enough to satisfy the needs of those around us!  This account reminds me of the day that Peter encountered the lame man at the temple gate begging for money. Peter saw the man’s need and said to him, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.  He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.” (Acts 3) Never underestimate the power of God to meet the needs of those around you, not just their physical needs but especially their spiritual needs. You may feel like you have nothing to offer them, but God does. Simply share with them what He has given you and trust that He will make sure it’s enough to meet their need.
