So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:34 NASB
Jesus encourages us to focus only on today, for tomorrow will take care of itself. There’s a lot of freedom in that thought. We don’t have to fix all of our problems at once, we just need to focus on the best plan of action for the next several hours. That removes the overwhelming anxiety of thinking too far in advance. After all, we may not be able to manage the changes needed for the next 20 years, but surely we can do what’s needed for the next 20 minutes! And then another 20 minutes, and another, and another. Could it really be that simple? It appears that Jesus thinks so!
Give us this day our daily bread. Matthew 6:11 KJV
When Jesus taught us to pray, He taught us to focus only on our needs for today. Consider this, in the wilderness, the manna came fresh each new day. During the drought, when Elijah stayed by the brook, the ravens brought him bread each morning and meat each evening. God is committed to supply all your needs, but He chooses to do so moment by moment. So we too must live in the moment, walking with Him by our side, trusting Him to help us through each new day.
So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the wilderness.” Hebrews 3:7-8 NIV
Today! How is God leading you today? Don’t wait to respond to His voice, respond now. Determine to obey Him today, this hour, this moment….right now. Set aside, for today, anything that hinders you and keeps you from being all He wants you to be. In so doing, you’ll find His strength sufficient for the day, one day at a time!
