As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life? Mark 10:17 NIV
That’s a question, at one time or another, every man contemplates. We’re all curious about eternity, and if we have any level of faith in God, we want to know what it takes to secure a spot in heaven. This man was no different, in fact, the text goes on to tell us that this man had kept the commandments, as best as he understood them, his whole life.
Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. Mark 10:21-22 NIV
This man who was so focused on “doing” what was needed to obtain favor with God that he failed to recognize and be drawn by Jesus’ love. “Come” Jesus said. He offered him a chance to travel by His side, to walk in relationship with Him, but the man turned Jesus down because he didn’t want to give up his wealth.
It’s not what we “do” or what we “have” that matters, it’s all about taking Jesus up on his offer to live in close relationship with Him. If there’s anything in your life that keeps you from drawing near to God, let it go, it’s just not worth it!
