For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NIV
The child who was born 2000 years ago was God in the flesh. He entered humanity to offer us a chance to know Him personally. These four “titles” tell us something about His character.
Wonderful Counselor – We all need someone we can turn to for counsel when we’re at a loss and just don’t know what to do, or when our hearts are breaking and we can’t find peace. A good counselor will give us direction. He’ll comfort us when we are in sorrow and reassure us when we’re afraid, not just telling us what we want to hear, but enlightening us in truth. A good counselor always knows what to say, and knows when to remain silent and just listen. His very words have a way of giving us hope and assuring us everything will be okay. Jesus isn’t just a good counselor, He is a wonderful counselor!
Mighty God – Jesus is a mighty God! He has all authority, and answers to no one. As much as I love His mercy and kindness, I count on His power and might to protect me from every arrow the enemy hurls in my direction! He has all power to defend us against any weapon formed against us! He has authority over all manner of sickness, depression, anxiety, and pain. He speaks and the storms obey. We can relax knowing that He has everything in our lives well under control!
Everlasting Father – I find comfort in knowing our heavenly Father is eternal. He always was, and He will always be. That means He is dependable. I can rest assured that He will always be everything I need! He’ll never be shaken, never defeated, and He’ll never let me down!
Prince of Peace – So many things in this life can steal our peace! What an encouragement knowing that Jesus can always restore our peace! He is the one who comforts us when we face loss or disappointment. No one else can touch our hearts, dispense the fear and sorrow, and settle our emotions like Jesus!
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV
If you find yourself in need of peace, cry out to Jesus! Share your pain with the one Isaiah called a Wonderful Counselor. Ask the Prince of Peace to restore your joy this Christmas and rejoice knowing that Jesus came not to condemn the world but to save it!
Amen & Amen! No one else can do, or say, or be …. what Jesus can do, or does say , and is!
