We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. 2 Corinthians 1:8b NIV
Ever been there? Life can be hard, really hard, and sometimes the pressure is beyond our ability to endure. But we’re Christians, right? Isn’t life supposed to be easy? I like that the Bible is relevant, and I appreciate the transparency of Biblical hero’s, like the Apostle Paul. We need to know that it’s okay to struggle as Christians. Life is hard, period. No one is immune from suffering. If anything, Christians are under even greater pressure because we have an enemy working day and night to wear us down. So why does it work that way? God is loving and kind, so why doesn’t He just step in and make everything easy?
Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 2 Corinthians 1:9 NIV
When this life is over, and we enjoy being in the presence of God through all eternity, the pressure will be gone and all will be well. But for now, as we journey through our stay on earth we learn to rely on God. He is never overwhelmed and never at a loss for answers. He has all power and all authority. He is all the help we need!
He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many. 2 Corinthians 1:10-11 NIV
Though we may not understand why God does not remove the struggle, we can be sure that He hears our prayers and will help us through the pain. He really does answer prayer. As we learn to rely on Him, we get to know Him better, and there’s nothing more satisfying than knowing God! Perhaps that’s the whole point.
