For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. Psalm 109:2 NASB
If you’ve ever been falsely accused, and most of us have at one time or another, you know how frustrating it can be. If it’s of a serious nature it goes beyond frustrating and can create real problems if we’re not able to prove our innocence. But there are a few things we can remember when we’re struggling through a false accusation.
A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will perish. Proverbs 19:9 NASB
It may appear that no one knows the truth, but God does. He sees everything exactly as it is, in fact, He even sees the motivation and attitudes of man’s heart. You can be sure, whoever is defaming your character and misrepresenting the truth will not go unpunished. God will hold them accountable.
For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ. Galatians 1:9 NASB
God is the only one we need to please. As long as our actions are pleasing in His sight, we need not worry about the approval of man. If man is deceived into believing lies about you, in the end, it really doesn’t matter.
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Matthew 5:11 ESV
Keep in mind that Satan, the father of lies, is behind every false accusation. As a follower of Jesus, you will endure persecution in one form or another, as the devil attempts to destroy you. Even if the accusation is not an obvious spiritual attack, you can be sure Satan is at the root of it.
And they began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King.Luke 23:2-3 NASB
As you struggle with the frustration and pain of a unfair attack you can be sure Jesus knows how it feels. He too was falsely accused and subject to the emotional and physical abuse of his accusers. Stay close to Him through the trial and find comfort in Him, realizing that He completely understands everything you’re going through.
They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause. In return for my love they act as my accusers; But I am in prayer. Psalms 109:3-4 NASB
The best thing you can do is run to God in prayer! Trust Him completely to either bring the truth to light or to give you the grace you need to stay strong in Him. You need not feel shame if you’ve done nothing wrong. Walk in confidence and strength but remain humble, relying on Him who knows and sees all things accurately.
