Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” Matthew 22:36-38 NIV
This passage challenges me to evaluate my love for God. Am I passionate about my relationship with Him? Is my heart in it? Is He always on my mind?
Think about the way you feel when you first fall in love, when you just can’t get your mind off of that special someone. Even if it’s not intentional, as you go about your daily routine, you find your mind constantly drifting back in their direction. Do you have that same experience with God?
If you read the verse prior to the ones above, you’ll find the it was an expert in the law who was asking Jesus this question; he was all about the law and the commandments. But Christianity really isn’t about following a bunch of rules. The heart of Christianity is a personal relationship with God; it’s all about being in love with Him.
In essence, Jesus told the man, just fall in love with God. When that happens, everything else falls into place.
