Pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 NIV
Why would God want us to give thanks in all circumstances? Could it be that we need to constantly counter the enemy’s voice by reminding ourselves of all that we have to be thankful for? Absolutely! The enemy loves it when we focus our mind on the negative, because there’s a darkness that accompanies negative thinking. Just like darkness and light cannot co-exist, nor can self-pity and gratitude.
Self-pity is a direct route to hopelessness, with lots of stops along the way: anger, bitterness, resentment, jealousy and loneliness, to name a few. But you don’t have to take that route! God’s word gives us a road map for a better journey! Give thanks! Gratitude leads to peace of mind. Consider all that you have to be thankful for. Make a list. Keep it with you all day long and add to it every time God brings something else to mind. Our thoughts have a direct impact on our mood and our feelings. Whatever you may be struggling with today, whatever challenge, hardship, or disappointment, don’t let it dominate your thoughts! Don’t let fear take over. Resolve to balance every negative thought with a reason to be thankful and pray continually.
