“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” Matthew 13:44-46
Is there anything you value so much, that you would give up everything else to have it?
We tend to think of a kingdom as a place, but the original Greek word translated as “kingdom” in this verse is “basileia,” which refers to the reign and rule of God as King, rather than a physical location where He rules. This verse could accurately start with, “Having God as your King is like a treasure…..”
We all journey through life hoping to find satisfaction and fulfillment; that’s the “treasure” we all seek. The truth is, God is the only one who can satisfy us. He is the treasure! When He reigns in our lives, we are satisfied, and when we turn away and make our own decisions, contrary to His desires, we are miserable! Like the man stumbling upon a treasure in the field, we are wise to abandon everything that challenges our submission to the reign and rule of God. Do whatever it takes to submit to God’s plan for your life, for that’s when you will experience real joy and fulfillment.
Is God your King?
