When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. Psalm 94:18-19 NIV
Some days we walk through life feeling like we’re just one step away from falling. Take comfort in knowing that God is there to support you with unfailing love and to console you with the joy that comes from walking with Him. Though you may be stumbling, you don’t have to fall!
The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. Psalm 37:23-24 NIV
The best way to keep from falling is to delight yourself in the Lord. Focus all your attention on Him. Let nothing else dominate your thoughts. Pray with every step. Be aware that He is right there with you and force yourself to process every thought with God in mind. Share with Him your fear of falling, and ask Him for support, not just at the start of the day, but again and again as you struggle to keep your mind on track and your feet from slipping.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. Psalm 121:1-8 NIV
Let that thought sink in. God is ALWAYS watching you. He sees everything you do, and is aware of every thought that crosses your mind. He knows what it takes to keep you from falling. If your goal is to stay on the path, God will help you, but you must stay close to Him. As the psalm says, “lift up your eyes.” Don’t let your mind exclude God from your thoughts, not even for a second.
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
Is your desire to keep from falling strong enough to make you willing to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ? That’s a task that takes diligence and hard work. God is committed to give you the support you need, but you must commit to the hard work it takes to deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow Him. And if you do, He will shower you with His unfailing love and console you with His joy!
To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. Jude 24-25 NIV
