We Are Not Only Forgiven, But Loved

“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Jeremiah 31:34b NIV

This is a promise of God, as he explains to the prophet, Jeremiah, the new covenant which is to come. In this promise he also declares:

“This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the Lord. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33 NIV

He promises his forgiveness and love to all of those who have committed to this new covenant – which is our Lord, Christ Jesus.

Many of us have done things that have us convinced we can never be forgiven. Sometimes we believe God will forgive us, but that we’ve have fallen out of his favor as a result of our actions. What does God say?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 NIV

And…

The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Jeremiah 31:3 ESV

He shows us his love and ability to forgive in all circumstances.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9 NIV

Any evidence we need, besides what we know in our own hearts, can be found in his word.

Several of his most beloved servants committed acts that we would never do in a lifetime, yet God raised them up on high. Moses committed murder. King David committed murder and adultery. Peter denied our Lord three times. Abraham lied several times, and laid down with a women who was not his wife. We are in good company. We are loved and forgiven for our acts as well, when we confess and repent. God makes us this promise, and has delivered to us a Savior to prove it.

Let him be praised!

Remember, God is love, and He first loved us!
