Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10 NIV
A strong walk with God results in the desire and ability to share his Word with others. To plant the seed of the Word, whenever possible, not only allows us to open the eyes of non-believers and give them the hope we have, but also strengthens our faith.
Way back in the beginning God introduced the concept of planting and bearing fruit.
Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Genesis 1:29 NIV
While the account of creation refers to the physical food God provides, it also points us to a time when God would ask us to find our spiritual nourishment in the word of God. Not just his written word but especially in the Living Word, his son and our savior Christ Jesus.
Interestingly enough, one of the most controversial moments in Jesus ministry was when he said the following.
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.” John 6:53-56 NIV
When we plant the seed of God’s word, we have the ability to nourish others spiritually. Jesus was not asking people to literally eat his flesh and drink his blood, but to realize that He is the real source of life. He is everything we need! We must provide food, in the form of the Word, for those God awaits to harvest!
How do we go about planting? Peter gives us some insight:
But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16 NIV
We plant and the Spirit brings the harvest. We begin to compete the spiritual cycle that is laid out above, God’s way, not ours!
Remember it is written:
Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes and showers his righteousness on you. Hosea 10:12 NIV
Remember to always Love one another.
