Concerned About Your Future?

The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me. Psalm 138:8 NLT

David rested in the thought that God was in complete comtrol of his life and he was comfortable leaving the details in His hands.  He was confident that God had plans for his life and would work them out in His time. That’s a sign of good spiritual health.

There are times in all of our lives when we can’t clearly see what the future hold for us and we simply need to rest in the same thought as David proclaims here. Sometimes these moments come upon us suddenly. We are living our lives, feeling like we have a good idea of the road ahead, then suddenly something changes; perhaps we lose our job, receive a life changing diagnosis, are involved in an accident, or endure the death of a loved one.  We thought we saw the future clearly and we were happy with the view but suddenly it feels like someone stepped on our glasses and we can’t see anything clearly anymore.

One thing I’ve always appreciated about David was his transparency.  He confidently declares “The Lord will work out his plans for my life,” but follows it up by asking the Lord not to abandon him. In one moment he’s confident and in the next he entertains the thought that God might abandon him.  I’ve ridden that rollercoaster a few times in my life!

When you’re worried about your future it helps to remember the times God has shown you His faithfulness in the past.

As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength. Psalm 138:3 NLT

David took time to look back and take inventory of all the times God had answered his prayers, encouraged him and given him strength. This was the basis for his ability to trust God with his future. That’s a great place to start if you feel like your view of the future is less than clear. Recall to mind the Lord’s faithfulness, remember His love for you, and rest in the thought that He will work out His plans for your life.
